BMW continues to make everyday vehicle access more convenient with technologies such as BMW Digital Key. BMW Digital Key Plus takes that convenience a step further by offering hands-free access with a compatible device. BMW of Asheville explains how Digital Key Plus differs from BMW Digital Key and what the technology offers.
Hands vs. Hands-Free
The biggest difference between BMW Digital Key and BMW Digital Key Plus is how your compatible device communicates with the vehicle. BMW Digital Key uses Near Field Communication (NFC), requiring you to hold your device near the driver's door handle to lock or unlock the vehicle and place it in the smartphone tray before starting.
BMW Digital Key Plus instead uses Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, allowing your BMW to recognize your compatible device as you approach. You can leave your smartphone or smartwatch in your pocket or bag while unlocking and starting the vehicle. BMW Digital Key Plus availability depends on your BMW model, vehicle equipment, and mobile device, so check compatibility before beginning the setup process.
What BMW Digital Key Plus Offers
BMW Digital Key Plus lets a compatible smartphone or smartwatch serve as your vehicle key, allowing you to unlock and start your BMW without reaching for a traditional key fob. When you leave the vehicle, your BMW can also recognize that your device is moving away and automatically lock the doors.
Digital Key Plus can also be shared with up to 18 friends or family members with compatible devices. You can send a Digital Key digitally, making it convenient to provide vehicle access without handing over your physical key. Depending on the vehicle and device, certain restrictions can also be applied to a shared key.
