Any blemish on your BMW, no matter how small, probably sticks out to you like a sore thumb. There’s nothing worse than a ding or scratch marring an otherwise gorgeous vehicle.
In addition to being a cosmetic issue, sometimes imperfections can be hazardous, especially when they concern your windshield. Our BMW service center offers some advice on dealing with windshield cracks.
How Big of a Deal is a Small Crack?
Small, tiny cracks on your windshield are not too hazardous and won't affect your visibility on the road. However, over time, cracks do get worse.
Right now, a crack could be fairly serious. This is because cold or chilly weather will cause moisture to get inside, which will make it spread. The bigger the crack gets, the more it could hurt your visibility, which impedes your safety. Plus, there’s a greater chance a cracked windshield will shatter in a crash.
Do I Need an Entirely New Windshield?
When a crack is small, typically it can be taken care of without too much of a problem. The rule of thumb is if the crack is three inches or smaller, you can easily get it fixed with a vacuum that will remove the moisture. Then, resin will be used to fill it in.
If the crack is larger, you will probably need a new windshield. Even if it’s not currently impairing your vision, it could prevent your car from passing its yearly inspection.
If your windshield has a crack in it, your best course of action is to take care of it quickly before it turns into a bigger and more expensive issue. To have it repaired, just make an appointment with our service center at BMW of Asheville.
