It’s always a little alarming when one of your dashboard warning lights suddenly comes on while driving. The best course of action is to figure out what’s wrong and get it taken care of as soon as possible.

Having issues fixed early on generally will help avoid big and expensive repairs down the line. However, in some cases, even after the problem is solved, sometimes those pesky BMW warning lights stay on anyway.

If this is something you’re dealing with right now, try these tips on how to reset your BMW warning lights

Step 1: Open up your hood and prop it up.

Step 2: Find the battery and the negative terminal. This will either be black (the positive terminal is red) or perhaps have a minus sign on it. Then, take a pair of pliers and loosen the nut holding the negative terminal to the battery. This is completely safe as long as you don’t touch both the negative and positive terminal at the same time.

Step 3: Remove the cable completely from the battery terminal, as this will cut off the power to the car’s computer. Leave it disconnected for at least 10 minutes.

Step 4: Reattach the cable to the terminal and tighten the nut.

Step 5: Close the hood and start the engine. Any warning lights should be gone.
