The BMW-specific Steptronic transmission is a perfect example of this type of innovation. While this may be the first time you’re hearing about it, BMW actually created this almost 20 years ago, and they’re still improving on its initial design.
What is the Steptronic Transmission?
The idea behind the BMW Steptronic transmission is to give drivers more control over their vehicles. As such, there are three driving modes to choose from with this type of transmission.
In automatic mode, there is never a need to worry about shifting. With manual/sport mode, the engine revs higher before shifting into another gear. In manual shift mode, the driver gets complete control over shifting. Plus, the paddle shifters on the steering wheel make it very easy to move from one driving mode to the other.
There is also a driver selector that can be tipped backward or forward, depending on which gear you want to be in. In addition, modern Steptronic transmissions also have some smart capabilities, preventing you from revving too much or shifting into an unsafe gear.
