Reports have been swirling for some time now about the BMW X3 possibly getting the M treatment. Recent spy photos seem to confirm the rumors.

The prototype seen on test roads has been nicknamed F97, and from what can be seen in photos, the vehicle will sport all the hallmarks of an M model, such as 20-inch rims, quad exhausts, a rear diffuser, roof spoiler, a side skirt, a front bumper, and big air intakes.

An X3 M model will certainly make BMW competitive against other upcoming models from rival brands. It is also possible, though, that the mule in question is not an X3 M at all but of an all-new model altogether.

The next X3 is expected to be launched in 2017 as a 2018 model, and the X3 M, if true, should follow soon after. If and when the model comes to fruition, then the X4 coupe will be expected to have its own M variant as well.

As expected of all M models, the X3 M will feature a twin-turbo inline six petrol engine taken straight from the M3 and M4. It is expected to have anywhere from 400 to 500 horsepower. It has also been speculated that the recently released quad-turbo diesel engine may be available as an optional upgrade. This engine will make its debut for the much larger 750d xDrive. If it is good enough for the large sedan, then it should be more than good enough for a nimble CUV.
