Spy photos captured the heavily camouflaged 2018 BMW G20 3 series as it was being tested in Arjeplog, Sweden, not far from the German automaker's test center.

Due to being camouflaged from front to rear, not much detail can be acquired from the spy photos. What is evident, though, is that the new 3 series will be modeling some of its designs after the 7 series. This was rumored for some time and is actually a welcome change in the eyes of many.

One of the more notable changes include slimmer headlights and slightly beefier kidney grilles. Unchanged is the front overhang, which still remains very short. Other than that, there is not much else that is discernable. The rear lights are completely covered in faux taillights, so there is no way to determine how the lights are actually shaped.

What is especially unusual, though, is the absence of air outlets for the Air Breathers. It is uncertain whether this feature will be absent altogether or if it was just left out for the prototype model.

It has also been confirmed that the new 3 series will utilize the CLAR platform for its underpinnings. BMW has also confirmed that the headlights will consist of all-new scalable, lighting technology. There will also be Active Steering, improved stability control systems, and a progressive rear axle. These additions are expected to be present for the new 4 series as well.

Finally, BMW is also said to be tinkering with the engine. Enhancements will include an electrically driven compressor for instant torque.

The G20 3 series is slated for a summer 2018 release.

Given that the release is still more than two years out, you might as well feast your eyes on the current BMW 2016 3 series. Check it out at BMW of Asheville or speak with one of our Fletcher NC car dealers.
