The BMW company has announced that plans are underway to build a new assembly plant in Mexico. Production of the BMW 3 series will take place at that factory in the near future.
Even more newsworthy, a source in Munich indicated that the German automaker will be adding a BMW M340i model to the BMW 3 series. Currently, the highest model is the BMW 340i. This will add an M performance car to the to the lineup for the first time.
The BMW M340i will get a B58 engine under its hood. This will give it a bit more power than the current BMW 340i. While no specific information about the engine has been disclosed, some speculate that it will deliver about 340 hp, roughly the same as the engine equipped in the BMW M240i.
It is also believed that a diesel variant will be available and be listed as the BMW 330d. It will likely be powered by a B47 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine.
Based on existing BMW M models, it is speculated that the exterior will be a bit more subdued compared to other BMW M cars. The wheels will probably be at least 18-inches, the bumpers will have a more aggressive styling, and an "M" badge will appear on every side of the car.
Finally, there is also news of a possible BMW X2, not to mention a potential BMW 440i for the BMW 4 series. This will give consumers even more options as they shop for the finest German-built automobiles on the North American market.
