The new and highly anticipated BMW X5 xDrive40e made its debut to the North American market in October, and reception exceeded expectations. As of December, the plug-in hybrid has sold 285 units. To break down the numbers, 118 X5s were sold in October. November fared even better with 167 units sold. The figures are not in yet for December, but the numbers are expected to be even more impressive due to holiday offers.
The addition of the BMW X5 xDrive40e is a welcome addition to the ever growing SUV market. The fact that it is a hybrid also serves as a precursor for large vehicles running partially or completely on electricity. The hybrid market is only going to grow moving forward.
It is no surprise the numbers were as impressive as they were. The new X5, after all, is fitted with a four-cylinder petrol engine that utilizes the German automaker's patented TwinPower Turbo technology. The result speaks for itself with 308 horsepower, 332 lb-ft of torque, and a fuel economy of around 55 mpg.
The speed is also quite impressive; the vehicle accelerates from 0-62 mph in just 6.8 seconds, quite an impressive feat for an SUV, and not even a compact model at that. When running fully on electric power, the xDrive40e is capable of reaching up to speeds of 75 mph. Top speed overall is 130 mph.
