It is no coincidence that the 3-series account for a quarter of all BMW. The Sedan and Sports Wagon from the series are especially popular sellers with over 14 million units sold worldwide.

The numbers are only going to get even better in 2016 with the rollout of the new 340i. This model will represent a step up in automobile innovation with a six-cylinder engine that produces 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque.

The storied success of the 3-series spans all the way back to the introduction of the first model released in its native Germany in 1975 and later in the North American market in 1976. At the time, the only model available was the 320i that came with a 110 hp engine. The compact vehicle was a success and sold 1.4 million units by 1983.

The 320i was later followed by the 325i in 1988, which was an all-wheel-drive model and came with an improved four and six-cylinder engine under the hood. By 1991, BMW released the E36 with a 24-valve six-cylinder that delivered 189 hp.

Multiple new models were released in the ensuing years, each with an improved engine and technological capabilities. Today, the company has the 2016 BMW 340i to boast about. The latest in the 3-series has a B58 from the automaker's own Efficient Dynamics engine family. It produces 320 hp, a near three-fold increase from the original 320i released 40 years earlier. Buyers will also have 12 color options to select from, including new additions like Jatoba Brown Metallic and Platinum Silver Metallic.
