Turbo engines are all the rage these days among car enthusiasts. BMW currently has the tri-turbo diesel available in the high-end premium market. Always being one to outdo itself, the automaker is already working on the next generation of diesel-powered engines. This engine is tentatively called the B57S or B57 TOP, depending on where you get your sources from. It will be a quad-turbo straight-six diesel and will be available for the 2016 BMW 750d. It may also be available for some of the high-performance variants in the X series. The same goes for upcoming 50d models.
As usual, developers are keeping a tight lid on the project and only releasing information in spurts. It is not known, for example, whether the engine will simply be a tri-turbo modified with an electric-driven turbo or a diesel with four turbochargers.
Here is what has been confirmed so far: the engine will have a 395 hp output and 590 lb-ft of torque, though the exact figures also differ slightly from report to report. Other sources list the hp at just slightly over 400. Regardless, the discrepancies are negligible and does not subtract from the fact that this will be a diesel designed to embody the very meaning of high performance.
Compared to the current tri-turbo, a quad-turbo should produce an even faster response, power, torque, and broader powerband. As with the tri-turbo, the quad turbocharged diesel will utilize xDrive, the automaker's own all-wheel drive system.
