For years, rumors have been swirling of BMW releasing an X2. Well, those rumors are finally confirmed with a prototype release of the compact crossover. The X2 is slated for a 2017 release as a 2018 model. It is modeled mostly after the X1, much the same way the X4 is derived from the X3 and X6 concept.
The X2's design can be best described as being much more "aggressive." The front has a low, wide stance. The windows are also quite short, as is the roofline.
As for the engine, no information has been released yet, though many believe it will - like the 2016 BMW X1 - be fitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder. This should enable an acceleration of 0-60 mph in slightly over six seconds. Other features shared with the latest X1 include a center console angled slightly towards the driver, a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel, and instrument cluster with four gauges.
The X2 will consist of a front-wheel-drive platform similar to that utilized for the Active Tourer models available for the X1 and 2-series.
The X2's official debut could take place as early as the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March, though official release will not hit dealerships until the latter half of 2017.
The X2 is part of the German automaker's XCITE project, and early prototypes have already been spotted in Germany.
