WardsAuto has released the top 10 automobile engines for 2016, and the B58, found in the latest BMW 340i, secured a spot on the list.
The B58 is replacing the N55, which itself was a beloved and often top-ranked engine during its own tenure. The N55 was an auto enthusiast's dream and everything car lovers could ask for in a six-inline cylinder. Of course, even the best engines must eventually be replaced, and the N55 is making its exit just as the B58 is making its debut.
Like its predecessor, the B58 utilizes a 3.0-liter TwinPower twin-scroll turbocharger. It will also have all of N55's technological features, such as Valvetronic, Dual-Vanos, and direct-injection systems.
In marketing the new engine, BMW heavily stressed that its latest innovation will drastically reduce charged air volume between intake and compressor, which is made possible using a water-to-air intercooler.
In addition, the B58 will also include an encapsulation system that allows the engine to hold onto most of its heat, thus reducing harmful emissions and reducing premature wear during start-ups under low temperatures.
At a glance, the B58 will deliver 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque with the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 secs.
Engine technology is vastly improving, so the B58 clearly has some stiff competition. The fact that it even made the top 10 is a testament to German engineering with respects to automobile manufacturing.
With some of the best automotive engines in the industry, it is no wonder why BMW is still going strong after nearly 100 years.
