When the traffic light hits yellow, there is that split second moment when you decide whether to stop for the impending red light or slam on the gas to make it past the intersection before the light changes. BMW will be implementing a new technology that helps you make a more informed judgement for such moments.

The German automaker announced the integration of the EnLighten iOS app. This device uses location data and GPS speed to help drivers anticipate when a traffic signal is about to change. The purpose is to increase safety; if drivers know the light is seconds away from changing, then they may be less inclined to try to speed past it.

With the EnLighten app built into the car's navigation display screen, drivers no longer have to repeatedly glance at their iPhone screen or listen for audible signals about the status of a traffic light just ahead. The interface shows a countdown timer letting the driver know when the next light's color is going to change. An indication is also given letting you know whether you will beat the light going at the current speed.

The app will even display a countdown timer for a left or right turn light if you indicate with your turn signal that you are going to make a turn.

Currently, the app requires your iPhone to be in the car for it to work. Also, Enlighten only works if your city has a network of smart traffic signals set up. As of now, North Carolina does not appear to be among the states with the smart traffic lights. Nevertheless, if the trend picks up, then it is only a matter of time.
