Many look for a car company to
exhibit forward vision. With new technologies and even newer ways to
make driving a better overall experience. BMW certainly leaves not a
shadow of doubt that we have forward vision. Facing facts though, this
is the automotive industry, which means that in order for any company to
survive, they have to have forward vision. That being said, what is it
that sets BMW apart? A BMW is not like a Ferrari in which one looks at
and flails their arms about in excitement, nor is it a car that goes
unnoticed, blending into it’s surroundings. The famous kidney grills,
for instance have been on BMW motorcars since 1933, and our famous 'Hofmeister Kink' has been a design hallmark for over half a century. One
can recognize a BMW even at night by only having seen our silhouette
turn a corner. These historic features are meant to stir emotions within
a person and creates that feeling about a BMW that some say they can’t
quite put a finger on.
Emotion
is something that BMW takes very seriously because as a company- they
realize it is the one most important thing that all human beings are in
possession of. Intellect is often neglected or hardly contemplated upon
these days in the automotive industry, and through sociological studies,
BMW realizes that. With that information, BMW creates vehicles that
posses a sort of “power” if you will, that registers with human
intellect and creates emotions, inspires deep thoughts, and blends
artistic design with scientific efficiency. Along with emotion, elegance
is an enigma in which car companies have chased after the true
representation of for decades. In the fifties, elegance was interpreted
as large tail fins, in the seventies, it was represented in an
agglomeration of plush carpets, earth tones, and exotic leathers.
Finally to the present times in which call upon an air of simplicity and
technological elegance. Old world luxury, and future technologies
married into one is something in which drivers experience in a BMW.
For
years, decades, and well past three quarters of a century, car
companies have pursued and followed trends and fads. With the
aforementioned point in mind, let’s look back to my original point.
Forward thinking leads to a future, and a future of forward thinking
needs a past to build on. In the 1950’s BMW had the Isetta micro-car, a
charming little car that was really the very first display of interior
dimension engineering. That decade also brought along another small
saloon that was a little larger and more common in appearance, the 700
enjoyed great success and paved a way for post-war BMW to come to
American soil. In looking at what the motoring public enjoyed from
driving the small Isetta and sportier 700, we move to the 1960’s in
which BMW presented the magnificent CS coupe series. A true GT car, that
when driven by the motoring press, delivered numbers that a domestic
American car of the time could only hope to achieve with engines that
were sometimes twice as big as that in which resided in the CS. With
emotions in a flurry over the CS, and the love affair with BMW firmly
cemented, we then released the 2000 series car. The 2000 was the car in
which Americans became familiar with what was now known as a performance
sedan. It delivered blistering speeds, and precise handling while still
being able to accommodate rear seat passengers comfortably.
All of these historic BMWs where from different times and had barely anything in common with one another (exception for the kidney grills of course), but they all were engineered throughout the years with forward thinking in mind. They were in possession of simple elegance and included of course mold shattering design that turned the industry on it’s heels to what we are today. As BMW takes the next steps to future production of electric and highly efficient alternative fuel cars- we will not forget and will continue to inspire emotions through a pedigree steeped in sheer motoring pleasure. The next time you see a BMW, take note to how your heart jumps and just remember that feeling is what fuels BMW on into the future. That feeling is the emotion that we car enthusiasts thirst for and sometimes fall victim to. That emotion, feeling, and experience is what BMW concerns itself with and is the reason why BMW is one of the best driving cars on the road.
