2012 BMW 550i Details

 

A turbocharged 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine powers the 2012 550i.  This engine is now smaller in size yet it produces more horsepower and torque compared to the previous model year's engine.  This new engine generates 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. 

 

Rear-wheel-drive comes standard on the 2012 550i.  All-wheel-drive (xDrive) is available as an option.  Rear-wheel drive models are equipped with either a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed automatic transmission.  An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on the xDrive models.

The 2012 550i rear-wheel-drive models have an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 15 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined for the manual transmission and 15 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg combined for the automatic transmission. The xDrive models are rated at 16 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg combined.

 

2012 550i models feature iDrive which permits the driver to intuitively control phone, navigation and audio functions with an easy to use controller.  An easily-viewed 10.2-inch color display is included with this system.

Many standard safety features are included with the 2012 550i such as stability control, traction control, four-wheel antilock brakes with advanced standby and drying features, emergency braking assist, electronic brakeforce distribution, a driver and passenger head restraint whiplash protection system, front-seat side airbags, and side curtain airbags.  This sedan also features BMW Advanced Safety System that integrates deployment of passive and active safety features and BMW Assist Safety Plan that includes numerous features such as emergency requests, automatic collision notification, and enhanced roadside assistance.

 

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 5 Series its highest rating of "Good" on the frontal-offset, side-impact, and roof-strength crash tests.  This vehicle also earned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's best score of five stars for overall performance, four out of five stars for overall front-impact protection, and five stars for overall side-impact protection.
