You know that old adage, “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst?” This seems to be especially fitting when it comes to car ownership.
If, for example, you drive an older vehicle, you hope that it will remain in good condition for as long as possible. However, it’s also important to realize that things go wrong and you need to be ready for them.
Just as well, it’s a good idea to learn how to jumpstart your battery before seeking out expert BMW service in Asheville.
How to Jumpstart Your Car
- Have a second vehicle park next to your non-working BMW car. Make sure the jumper cables can reach both batteries, then turn off the car and pop both hoods.
- Attach the red clip of one cable to the positive terminal on the dead battery (you should see a plus-sign or POS). Connect the other end to the positive terminal on the working battery.
- Attach the black clip to the negative terminal on the working battery (you should see a minus-sign or NEG). Then, connect the other end to an unpainted metal surface away from the dead battery.
- Turn on the working car. Let it run for a couple of minutes.
- Start your non-working car. When it comes on, leave it on and disconnect the batteries.
- Drive it around for 15 to 20 minutes to fully recharge the battery.
If you have a newer battery, you should be good to go for a while. If, however, your battery is more than three years old, consider having it checked out to see what kind of life it has left. Luckily, you can do just that at our service center at our BMW dealership.
