When Should You Check Your Tire Pressure?
Our service technicians recommend checking your tire pressure every month. This is because things like temperature fluctuations can affect the pressure in each of your tires. For every 10-degree drop, for example, tire pressure decreases by one psi (pound per square inch). This is especially important to remember as it gets colder in Asheville.
Tips for Checking Tire Pressure
There are a couple of ways to keep tabs on your tire pressure. First, you can regularly check it at gas stations, as they generally have a gauge on their air hoses. Secondly, you can get your own gauge; while a stick type may be fine, a digital model will give you a more accurate reading. No matter what you use, it’s important to check your tires when they’re cold; recently-driven cars will have warm tires, which increases your tire pressure.
Next, locate the little tubes on your tires and take off the caps. Put the end of the gauge into the tube and secure it firmly. You’ll know it’s on tight when you don’t hear any air escaping.
To make sure your reading is accurate, you may want to measure your tire's pressure a few times. To find the correct pressure level for your tires, look at the doorjamb on your driver's side door. There should be a sticker that will tell you what the correct psi is. Always stick to this number, as under- or over-inflated tires are dangerous and hurt your gas mileage.
