Understand the Warning Lights on Your BMW Car Dashboard

Some lights on your BMW dashboard are pretty self-explanatory, such as the left and right arrows indicting the turn signals are on, or the high beam icon. However, other icons only switch on once in a blue moon to indicate a problem with the vehicle. You may not recognize these symbols due to almost never seeing them. We will explain what some of the common icons on a BMW car dashboard mean.

An icon of a driver with a seat belt and an oval shape in front of him indicate a failed airbag system and/or a worn seat belt tensioner. These are serious problems that can compromise your safety in a collision. Bring your vehicle to our BMW service center near Asheville, NC, right away. Here are a few other icons you should know:

  • The letter P encased inside a circle - This indicates an issue with your parking brake system.
  • An Exclamation Mark – a problem with the Stop Start Technology
  • Circle with dotted lines on the side – the brake pads are worn and require replacement
  • Exclamation mark inside a light bulb – an exterior light bulb has gone out
  • Gas canister – if the light is yellow, then oil levels are low. If it is red, then it's dangerously low and you should pull over.
  • Partially filled canister – the coolant levels are low. You need to especially watch out for this icon during summer commuting.
