A heavily camouflaged 2018 BMW X3 was spotted on test roads in the Nurburgring, and some of the design characteristics have led some to believe that the prototype may have been fitted with a quad-turbo diesel engine, better known as the B57. If so, this would mean that a BMW X3 xDrive50d is in the works.

How is the prototype 2018 BMW X3 different than the 2017 BMW X3? For one, it sits a bit lower and also has slightly larger tires. It also appears to have more aggressive front air intakes. Keen observers have also noted that the prototype was able to speed through corners at a much faster rate than you would expect in a BMW X3.

The biggest evidence of the B57 engine, though, lies in the relatively quiet operation. Observers noted virtually no engine noise is heard other than a slight grumble, which strongly hints at a diesel engine.

What are the implications of a B57 engine for the BMW X3? It means a massive increase in torque. It will also be a lot quicker, so much so that it renders a possible BMW X3 M obsolete.

Diesel engines are all the craze among the BMW lineup. There are also talks of the BMW 3 series getting a 4-cylinder diesel engine of its own with a B47 engine code. This engine is expected to deliver 190 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. BMW has already confirmed a diesel engine for the BMW 5 series in 2018.
