BMW currently does not have a V8 engine. It did in the past but gave up on it. It has, however, continued to fine-tune its six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. The German automaker's most impressive engine as of now is the triple-turbo diesel engine, which delivers an impressive 376 hp.

As powerful as that may be, it is still not enough, considering that other German brands are really pushing the limits of the V-8 engine. This is why BMW has confirmed that it is still refining its inline six engine. The newest incarnation will have four turbochargers instead of three.

With this engine, BMW removed the single low-pressure charger of the previous model and replaced it with two miniature-sized ones. What difference does this make? Basically, the two smaller chargers provide extra boost under a high rpm and load.

The new quad-turbo diesel engine also provides 304 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. For now, the engine will only be available for the upcoming, Europe-exclusive BMW 750d xDrive. Fitted with the engine, it will be able to go from 0-60 mph in around 4.5 seconds. On top of that, it also reduces fuel usage by 5 percent.

It has also been confirmed that the quad-turbo engine will see a significant boost in revving capability. Thanks to a new fuel-injection system, it will be able to operate at roughly 36,000 psi. Finally, the torque has also been improved dramatically, though the maximum output is limited depending on the specific transmission equipped.

Whether the 3 series or the 2016 BMW X5, German vehicles have always been renowned for their stellar engines. Visit BMW of Asheville to see what is in our latest inventory of certified BMW cars near Hendersonville NC.
