Car enthusiasts around in the 1990s likely remember the BMW 8 Series. The model was discontinued in 1999, but during its run, it was known for its pointy front and low-slung stance design. It was quite sporty and a real looker for that time period. The fact that it could be upgraded with a V-12 engine did not hurt its image either.

Rumors are now spreading that the BMW 8 Series may be revived. This will put the German automaker at a more competitive footing with other luxury cars. Furthermore, it has been speculated that an M8 variant will be released as well. This will certainly be a new step considering that an M8 was never released during the original run of the BMW 8-series. The automaker, however, did reportedly experiment with prototypes. If there is indeed a BMW M8, then it will likely borrow its engine from the BMW M6: a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

If news of the revival is true, then this will likely impact future plans for the current BMW 6 Series, which is based off the BMW 5 Series. Since the original BMW 8 model is strikingly similar to the current 6-series, any future development plans intended for the BMW 6 or M6 might very well go to the BMW 8.

It is believed that if the model is indeed returning, then the platform will likely be based on the current BMW 7 Series. If so, that means it will have the same technology features, engine, and chassis.
