As of January, BMW has reached a new milestone with over 500,000 units from its i-series lineup, consisting of the automaker’s two plug-ins, the i3 and i8.

The i3 was released in its native Germany back in September 2013, with the i8 making its debut in June the following year. Both models have since seen a world-wide release.

The i3 is currently sold in 49 countries, and the US market leads the way, followed by Germany, Norway, the UK, and Switzerland. The i8 is sold in nearly just as many countries with the U.S. also leading.

When the first i-series rolled out in 2013, only 1,477 units were sold for that year, compared to 29,513 units for 2015. As for 2016, 1,255 units have been sold so far, so that is a solid indicator that BMW is expected to beat its old record for the fourth consecutive year.

Aside from being plug-ins, the i-series vehicles are also known for their carbon fiber reinforced plastic, the same carbon fiber utilized to make race cars. There are also rumors that BMW is working on introducing new models to the i-series, though no official word has been released as of yet.
