The 2016 BMW X3 has just earned the honor of a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The rating was received for side, frontal, and rollover crash tests. The stellar ratings were attributed to the X3's sophisticated computer algorithm that determines with precision timing when to deploy side airbags for maximal protection while reducing injury from the impact of the airbag itself. The computer is included in all X3 models built after March 2011.
For even more safety, the 2016 models also come with active front seat head restraints, side curtain airbags, front-seat side airbags, automatic brake drying, and stability and traction control.
Additional safety add-ons include a lane-departure warning system, rear view and surround-view parking cameras, forward-collision mitigation system, active blind-spot monitor, rear and front parking sensors, and a lower instrument panel with knee-level airbags.
Keep in mind that this all pertains to the 2016 model. The 2017 X3 is expected to come with even more updated tech, not to mention a sportier design. Base on the available spy photos, the upcoming X3 will apparently have more angular shapes and an all-new design for the headlights.
In addition, the base weight will also be roughly 220 pounds lighter thanks to the use of lighter material for the frame. The lighter body will also mean improved driving dynamics and smoother handling. For the first time ever, BMW will also offer an optional X3 model with an extended wheelbase. This variant will be available in China, though it has not been confirmed whether it will be available for the North American market.
