In an effort to cement its name in the electric car market, BMW announced plans to incorporate electric hybrid technology into three new models, which will include components similar to the BMW X5 xDrive40e and the i8.

The petrol-electric hybrid engine has been confirmed for the BMW 225xe, 740e, and 330e. For the 225xe, drivers will have complete control of their vehicle, including the ability to distribute power evenly between the wheels or put more emphasis on the front or back wheels as needed based on road conditions.

On the subject of the 224xe, the 2 series model will be powered by a 1.5-liter three pot petrol engine the delivers 134 hp in the front, while the rear is powered by an electric motor that churns out 88 hp.

The electric hybrid engine can travel up to 25 on a full charge, but you can opt to save that as a reserve, while commuting as usual using a typical gasoline motor.

With the BMW 330e, the vehicle will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 248 bhp. If you opt for the 7 series 740e, the engine will deliver 321 bhp. Like the 224xe, both models will have an electric motor that can go up to 25 miles on a full charge. Furthermore, BMW has also announced that it plans to launch a budget electric car model priced at around $35,000 by 2017.
