The BMW 3-series has always been the German auto maker's flagship model. Since its inception in 1975, more than 14 million units have been sold worldwide. In fact, in some years, the 3-series has accounted for as much as 70 percent of total BMW. The model is currently in its sixth generation, and the 2016 BMW 3 series will be seeing quite a few changes with most of the modifications being under the hood.

In the exterior, the 2016 model will boast a wider trim on the rear apron and full-width LED taillights. The interior will have chrome accents, high-gloss black trim, and ambient lighting. All 328i and 340i models will also be fitted with sport seats.

Beneath the hood is where the biggest changes have been made. The 340i specifically, will be fitted with a B58 I-6 engine, which will replace the previous N55. This twin-scroll turbocharged engine delivers 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. This represents a 10 percent increase in fuel efficiency compared to the N55.

Also exclusive to the 340i is an acoustic-foam insulation encasing that helps the engine retain heat for as long as 36 hours after the vehicle is switched off. This helps the car warm up more quickly while using less fuel and reducing emissions.

Other tweaks include improved high-speed stability and steering, upgraded dampers, and modified suspension geometry.

The 2016 BMW 3-series will include, for the first time ever, a plug-in-hybrid known as the 33oe. It will be powered by a drive system that delivers around 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.
