BMW is in the midst of releasing the new X1, which is expected to be a bigger version of the brand's small X1 SUV lineup. The release date is set for fall, and the model will be available exclusively as an all-wheel drive, at least for the initial release.
The 2016 BMW X1 boasts a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine and can reach 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. The transversely mounted engine is based on the same construction and architecture as the BMW Mini Coupe and is 66 pounds lighter than the 2015 X1.
Despite the lighter weight, the 2016 edition will have more spacious passenger and cargo room. The driver and passengers will benefit from an additional 1.5 inches of legroom. The front seats are also raised by one inch and 2.5 inches for rear seats. Buyers will also have the choice of gracing the interior with an optional reclining and sliding rear bench.
The exterior design, though, will remain more or less the same with a long roofline and forward leaning stance, a staple of BMW SUVs. New features not present in the previous year's model include full-LED adaptive headlights, power front seats, and a head-up display.
For the time being, the X1 will only be available as an all-wheel drive. A front-wheel model, though, will be available in Europe, and it’s unclear at this time whether that version will be released later in the U.S. market.
