See if this scenario sounds familiar—you’re driving your BMW, when suddenly, a light comes up on the dashboard. Immediately, you get a little freaked out and wonder if your car is alright. Your mind races with thoughts of repairs, replacement parts, and BMW service.

Fortunately, in many instances, a warning light isn’t reason to panic, as you may just need some basic maintenance. These common warning lights will let you know what you require.

Oil Can

If you see this light, it probably means you’re due for an oil change. While that’s an easy fix, it could also mean you’re low on oil, and this may indicate another problem, like a leak.

If a little square with a plus and minus pops up, something is wrong with your battery. There may be a problem with a connection or it could be on its last legs.

When the thermometer lights up, your engine is becoming too hot, which could lead to overheating. Stopping your car for a little while can help it cool down.

Exclamation Mark

Anytime you see an exclamation mark, you should take notice, especially in your vehicle. If you see one in a horseshoe on your dashboard, this means the tire pressure in one or more of your tires is low. If you see an exclamation mark in a circle, you need to have your brakes checked, as this could indicate a brake fluid leak.

Circle with Dotted Lines

This is another BMW warning light you don’t want to ignore, as this means your brake pads are worn and will probably need to be replaced.

If you’ve seen any of these lights come up on your dashboard, don’t get scared. Just make an appointment with our service center at BMW of Asheville. We’ll diagnose the problem and give you an expert repair or replacement.
