10 Fun BMW Facts from BMW of Asheville in Arden, NC

Whether you’re in the market for a new BMW car or simply appreciating being an owner of one of our fantastic luxury vehicles, we feel that it’s important to remember where we came from. Today, we’re here to spotlight some fun facts about our brand and some of our biggest accomplishments to date.

  1. BMW originally manufactured aircraft engines. During WWI, our brand became well known for high-altitude performance and fuel efficiency.
  2. BMW started making cars due to the Treaty of Versailles. With German companies banned from producing, BMW moved toward motorcycles and then cars to make up for the missing market in Europe at the time.
  3. Our first car was technically the BMW Dixi car as part of Automobilwerk Eisenach in 1928.
  4. The colors used in our logo represent Bavaria, which is our main headquarters to this day. The blue and white colors work in combination with the Rapp Motor company-inspired logo.
  5. We’ve been working on electric cars since the 20th century including the BMW 1602e in 1972. (Unfortunately, the tech was not yet advanced enough for the performance required to take that model to market at the time.)
  6. Rolls-Royce and MINI are part of the BMW family.
  7. Our headquarters is designed like a BMW four-cylinder engine by an Austrian architect with the newest tower added just before the 1972 Olympics.
  8. We built the world’s fastest motorbike with BMW Motorrad.
  9. Our signature grille is called the Kidney Grille, and it first appeared on the BMW 303.
  10. BMW is still involved in the aerospace and train industries, including designing luxurious interiors for airplanes.
