Steptronic Transmission Now Standard on Select BMW Models

BMW automakers has announced that starting in March, select models will be getting the Steptronic 8-speed gearbox transmission as standard.

Some people have surmised that this could potentially mean that the German automaker may do away with the manual transmission option, though this has not been confirmed.

Steptronic transmission will be available on select 2018 BMW 3 series models, including the 2018 BMW 320d xDrive Gran Turismo and 2018 BMW 320d xDrive Touring. The BMW 3 series, by the way, is the best-selling BMW model in Europe. The addition of the Steptronic transmission should ramp up sales even further in both U.S. and European markets.

In addition, several 2018 BMW 4 series models will also be getting the new transmission, including the 2018 BMW 4 series Coupe and 2018 BMW 4 series Gran Coupe.

On the subject of the BMW 3 series and BMW 4 series, the diesel variants of these models will also receive the BMW BluePerformance technology as standard.

So, for those unfamiliar, what exactly is the Steptronic transmission? This is a BMW exclusive that essentially offers the best of both worlds for those undecided between an automatic and manual transmission. Some people, in fact, call it the "manu-matic" transmission. Basically, with Steptronic, drivers can alternate between automatic and manual transmission. When in the latter, shifting is very smooth and swift. There is also a third mode known as manual/sport that increases engine rev before shifting.
