2018 BMW 5 Series to Get Diesel Engine

Currently, the BMW brand is the only German automaker that releases diesel options for its North American lineup. Other brands have done so in the past, but have since discontinued for the U.S. market. It has also just been announced that the 2018 BMW 5 series will be getting a diesel variant as part of its lineup.

The diesel turbocharged 3.0-liter inline engine will go under the hood of the new BMW 540d sedan. Its mechanics will be modeled after the B57 engine and will deliver 261 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque.

This isn't the first time the BMW 5 series is graced with a diesel engine. The previous generation model had a diesel engine modeled after the N57 engine that delivered 255 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. This engine is also currently an option for the 2018 BMW X5.

According to BMW officials, the new diesel engine under the BMW 5 series can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.1-seconds. If the figure is accurate, then this will make it the fastest diesel engine ever in America.

The engine also delivers solid mileage at 36 mpg. It will, however, only be available in an xDrive variant, meaning all-wheel drive. This is in line with the diesel variant of the 2018 BMW X5, which is only available in xDrive as well. Consumers will have the option to beef up their set of wheels with various extras, such as driving assistance and dynamic handling packages.
